Cushion Placement: Ideas & Inspiration

Let’s start with some of our own tried-and-tested placement ideas in the following visual.

Tips for Placement:

  1. Asymmetrical Balance: If you love a more laid-back, casual look, go for an asymmetrical arrangement. For example, place a mix of cushions on one side of the sofa and add a throw blanket for texture.
  2. Symmetry for Structure: If you prefer a neater, more polished style, mirror your cushion arrangement at both ends of the sofa. This works especially well for larger sofas.
  3. Layering for Depth: Start with larger cushions at the back and layer smaller ones in front. This adds depth and makes the arrangement visually interesting.
  4. Mix Textures and Patterns: Don’t be afraid to experiment with textures and patterns to bring character to your sofa. Balance busy patterns with neutral tones to keep it cohesive.

Cushion Sizes: What You Need to Know

Choosing the right cushion sizes is key to making your arrangement look intentional rather than overcrowded. The size chart below highlights three of the most common sizes to work with.

Cushion Size Guide

  • 60x60cm (Euro): These oversized cushions are great for anchoring your arrangement and work well on larger sofas.
  • 50/55cm Square: A versatile option that fits into almost any cushion setup. Use these to complement your larger or smaller styles.
  • 40x60cm (Lumbar): Perfect for adding variety and breaking up the symmetry. Lumbar cushions are also great for providing back support.

How to Style Based on Sofa Size

  • Small Sofas: Stick to fewer cushions (around 3–4) to avoid overcrowding. A single lumbar cushion paired with two squares works beautifully.
  • Medium Sofas: Aim for 5 cushions to create balance. Mix sizes for interest, such as two large cushions, two medium, and one lumbar.
  • Large Sofas: You can go all out with 6+ cushions! Use symmetry for a classic look or asymmetry for a more relaxed vibe.

Cushion styling is all about finding what works for your space and reflects your personal style. Whether you prefer a minimalist arrangement or a bold, layered look, these tips and visuals should give you the confidence to create a setup you’ll love.
